Guitar lesson: Learn To Play Every Breath You Take By Ear

By: Peter Edvinsson
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to play the hit songs you hear on the radio and be able to play them on your guitar even without tabs or sheet music! In this guitar lesson we will use Every Breath You Take as an example. The hits songs you hear are usually copyright protected and shouldn't be found as free sheet music on the internet and really not as guitar tab either without permission from the copyright owner. However I can tell you that I personally have saved a lot of money by my ability to play songs I hear by ear. I don't have to buy sheet music and I can also play them as they are heard on the radio or make a guitar solo version of them.To be able to play songs on your guitar by ear you have to develop your ear and your ability to find yourself around on the guitar fretboard. In this guitar lesson I will show you how to play "Every Breath You Take" in the key of G. This means that you cannot play together with the original version by Police and Sting but I think it will be easier to play the melody on your guitar in this key.Guitar lesson part 1The verse begins with the words "Every breath you take"The chords on your guitar will be:G Em C D GThe melody notes you will need in order to play this song will be:G A B C DA very economic melody as far as melody notes are concerned. But how do you play these notes on your guitar?I will show you these notes with a form of guitar tablature that will be displayed correctly on article sites like this one. Some examples:23 means that you press down the second fret on the third string.03 means that you play the third open string. This means that you play the third string with you right hand without pressing down a fret.In other words, the first number indicate which fret to press down and the second number which string.Guitar lesson part 2Let's go back to the melody notes you'll need for the first verse:G A B C DWith the previosly explained guitar tablature the notes will look like this:03 23 02 12 32I will not show you the melody. You are supposed to learn to find this out by yourself. I will only help you by saying that the first note to play is B and is notated 02.Guitar lesson part 3Let's take a look at the part of the song beginning with the words "Oh, can't you see"The chords will be (a bit simplified):C G A DThis part starts with the note G notated 03.The notes you will need to use are:G B D E F# G Aand they are notated like this:03 02 32 01 21 31 51This melody starts with the note G notated 03.I will not help you more that this in this guitar lesson. The best way to learn the melody is by trial and error. In the process of learning this melody you will also develop your ear and your ability to find your way around on your guitar. This means that the next melody you will try to learn will probably be easier to learn! You can prepare yourself to pick up melodies on your guitar by doing these two exercises:1. Learn scales on your guitar. Learn to play the scales up and down.2. When you know a scale well you can improvise simple melodies and play around with the scale and at the same time you will learn to find your way around the guitar. The more you learn scales and create your own melodies on your guitar the easier you will have to figure out how a certain melody can be played on your guitar.

Song Writing: Is It Hard Or Easy To Write A Song?

By: Peter Edvinsson
Do you feel that it is easy to write songs? Can anyone be creative? A song is the end product produced by stimulating your song writing powers in many different ways. Let's take a look! Here are some tips on how to stimulate and develop your song writing abilities:ListenAn obvious tips of course! You have to listen to songs to find and develop your taste. But don't just listen to the music you usually listen to. Listen to things you don't normally hear on the radio. It will help your unconscious to create more interesting songs.I recall that John or Paul in the Beatles talked about the music they heard on the radio when they were young. The radio channels in those days played many different types of music and they were inspired by the melodies heard on the radio like evergreens, jazz, folk music and classical music and so on.On commercial radio channels nowadays you'll often find very niched music but I think it is important to find music that differs a lot from your normal taste. All these musical ideas will hopefully mold into interesting new melody lines. A form of fusion music.Chord progressions Sit down with your guitar or at your piano just playing chords that loosely seem to fit together. Don't worry about the quality of your progressions. It is important to have moments when you play without evaluating things, otherwise you will not dare to take the step into the unknown.Song melodiesHumming melodies as you play chords on your guitar or piano in a relaxed manner will stimulate your creative powers. If you find it hard to improvise melodies, it might comfort you to know that it is a talent but also a skill that can be dveloped by practice. It can become a form of meditation that will clear your mind, stimulate your imagination and improvisational skills.LyricsWell, what do you expect me to write here? Right, humming melodies with nonsense lyrics is a great way to stimulate and actually write a song. Nonsense lyrics might not be the apropriate term as every word you sing can trigger ideas that will lead you to a phrase that might be the beginning of a great song.DocumentationA very boring and bureaucratic word indeed but somehow you have to find a way to remember all nice words and melodies. A recording device like an mp3-player, mobile, digital recorder or tape recorder might do. The simpler the better. You can of course do as I do, write sheet music and lyrics on scrap paper. However, this requires you to know sheet music notation unless you have invented your own notational system.Using a computerPersonally I have discovered the advantage of using a word processor at this final stage of creating the song lyrics. I usually write down the text with a font size that will fill a printed page. This makes it easy to see the text on the screen and taste the lyrics with my heart. This might sound a little weird but I guess that you want the listener to feel the same as you feel when you sing the song. You have to be touched by you own song first. When you have the lyrics on your computer you can change a word here, a word there and and read the words over and over. One day you will realize that the song is complete and you can relax and be proud over your creation.A song is not a song until it is sungWell, this means that you have to give your song a chance to shine by singing it, working on your way to perform it and learning it by heart. By singing a song often, even in front of other people, it will most likely mature and the performance will develop and convey the message of the song better and better.

Get Rid Of Singing Stage Fright

By: Chris Chew
Do you know that even well known professional singers also get stage fright now and then. A bout of terrible stage fright had prevented the great Barbara Streisand from performing live for many years. So you are not alone, aren't you?In reality, stage fright is only a mental condition for the fear of the unknown. Yes, it is the basic human fear, a survival instinct. This is a very common affliction and affect everyone who have to go on stage to face an audience. Surveys have shown that many people fear public speaking more than death, what more a singing performance. There will always be many questions racing through your mind at break neck speed before each show such as 'Oh dear, I have a bad throat today, will it affect my singing. Will I go out of tune? How will the audience react to my performance?' This is when you will break out in cold sweat and become frigid. As answers to these questions cannot be known until after your performance, you get stressful and so anxiety and fear weigh in heavily on you. Hey, why bother about it when no matter how you wreck your mind and fret over it, you will never find any answers until after your singing performance, isn't it?Stage fright fear triggers a fight or flight response producing hormonal changes in your body, making the body rigid, shutting down digestive system and increasing your heart rate. This definitely is not an ideal condition for singing. You do know that stress and anxieties can affect your voice, persona and performance in a detrimental way and that will compound your fear even further. Everything just pyramids up.One of the best ways to overcome stage fright is to be mentally and physically well prepared. Having known that you have practiced your songs and performance thoroughly will give you the confidence and strength to take to the stage to flaunt your talent and hard work rehearsing.Another way to overcome stage fright is to take your mind off it. What better way to do that than to do your warming up vocal exercises. I know that many singers don't even bother warm up their vocal chords. How can a singer sing effortlessly without warming up their instrument, in this case, the vocal chords properly? Warming up before a performance not only takes your mind away from the stress, it helps you hit the notes easier and protect your vocal chords from damages, sometimes, even permanent damage.Just as important as warming up is to cool down your voice after a performance as your vocal folds are all stressed up and need to be relaxed. By not cooling down, you risk vocal damage and when your strained voice, having not recovered before your next singing performance, you will risk another bout of anxiety attack leading to stage fright. It is a vicious cycle.Do always remind yourself that stage fright is only in your imagination and can be controlled if you are determined enough to. Don't just fret about it. Do something. Like stepping onto the stage and give the best singing performance of your life.Once you have done it once, you can do it again and again and will succeed in get rid of stage fright forever. That will be the most beautiful feeling a singer can ever feel.

Alex Boye` European LDS Musician, The biography of

By: Bart Gibby
Alex Boye is a spiritual soul crooner but it hasn't always been that way. Until seven years ago he was climbing the pop charts of Europe on the fast track to stardom. Then something changed."I seemed to have everything, but I wasn't satisfied," Alex said. "Deep down I felt a loss."Alex grew up mimicking the sounds of mo-town, but never considered a career in music. It wasn't until he returned home to London, England, from a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that he realized singing was what he wanted to do.In 1995 Alex formed the pop group, Awesome. They performed locally at dances and other small venues, but in 1996 their dreams of making it big turned into a reality when they won a vocal competition on London's largest radio station, Capitol Radio. Universal Records of Europe signed Awesome for a five-album deal.Awesome released three singles off their first album, Rumors, which made Top-10 charts all across Europe. The group was working with high-profile celebrities and touring with artists like N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, Missy Elliott, and MC Lyte."It really was a great experience," Alex said. "It got to the point where I had all the things I ever thought would make me happy. I had fun and money but then it really went pear-shaped."People's priorities began to change and the lifestyle didn't fit him. When Alex left the band in 1999 to pursue a solo career he lost everything. The record company took the apartment, the clothes, the phone and the money.Despite the loss, Alex persevered with the driving energy inherent in his soul, and in 2000 he released his first solo album, No Limits, which included pop and R&B for the new age. The album, full of uplifting lyrics straight from the heart, reached No. 12 in the European charts but again he found himself in the same dilemma."On my mission, the spirit was there when I sang," Alex said. "In the band it wasn't ever like that, and even though I was now on my own, it still didn't feel like I was where the Lord wanted me to be. One day I was reading the scriptures and it said to forsake this world and seek for something better and how the song of the righteous is a prayer to Him. I realized I wanted to do music that was more uplifting that could do something for someone."Alex moved to Utah to begin a new career in faith-centered music. In 2001 he released his first gospel album, The Love Goes On, and gained a rapidly increasing fan base. In 2003 he released his second contemporary Christian album, Testimony, which features a moving compilation of soulful ballads aimed at touching the soul and lifting the heart. With his latest project, Build the World, Alex has found his niche. The album, to be released in 2005, is an R&B collection of life changing lyrics with a gospel neo-soul flare."I see the youth and I see their music. They desperately need an alternative," Alex said. "This album is just that. It's faith-centered music for the dance world. I hope the youth will see that there is good music out there and that you can have fun and dance while still living a clean life."Alex's heart and soul voice and engaging personality can move any listener, but it's his deeply rooted belief in who he really sings for that makes him more than just another entertainer. His inspiration comes from the Lord and his only purpose is to have the Spirit there when he sings.Official Website: www.alexboye.com"When the spirit is there it inspires you to change and to think about the things the Lord wants you to think about," Alex said. "To be involved in that process is amazing. I'm not making the kind of money I used to make and I don't have the fame and notoriety I used to, but I'm doing what the Lord wants me to do."

How Bagpipes Are Constructed

By: Gregg Hall
Almost everyone I know loves the sound of bagpipes. I love the sound myself even though I am of Native American and French origin. Let's take a look at what creates the unique sound of bagpipes. All bagpipes are made with an air supply, a bag, and a chanter. More sophisticated bagpipes may also include more chanters and drones to enhance the sound. The most common method of supplying air to the bag is by a blowpipe, into which the player blows. The blowpipe can be fitted with a non-return valve, or the player can close the tip of the blowpipe with their tongue while they breathe.Starting back in the 6th or 17th century a bellows began to be used to supply air. The big advantage to using a bellows for the air supply is that the air has not been moistened and heated by the player's breath which allows one to use more delicate reeds and also allows the instrument to be played longer. The bag is crucial to the bagpipes of course as they hold air while the player breathes, this way the bagpipe player can play without the need to take a breath. This gives the player the advantage of being able to breathe more naturally and play without discomfort for a longer time. The bags are usually made of skins from local animals such as goats and sheep. Some modern bagpipes have been made with materials such as rubber, goretex, and other airtight fabrics. When made of skin, the bag is usually saddle-stitched with an extra strip folded over the seam to prevent air leaking. Holes are cut in the bag to accommodate the stocks, the connectors which the various pipes are attached to the bag with. With more modern materials, the seam is usually stitched and then a strip of material glued in place to achieve the same purpose. These bags are often fitted with rubber collars to insert the stocks in, which can result in a better, tighter fit with less chance of damaging the bag while attaching the stocks. The chanter is the pipe that actually controls the music that comes from the bagpipes and can be played with one or both hands. There are three types of chanters: a chanter internally can be bored such that the inside walls are parallel for the full length of the chanter or it can be bored in the shape of a cone. Additionally, the reed can be a single or a double reed. A single reeded chanter can only be parallel bored, as conical bored chanters do not work with a single reed. However, both conical and parallel bored chanters operate with double reeds, and double reeds are by far the more common. The chanter is usually open ended; thus, there is no way for the player to stop the pipe sounding easily. This means that most bagpipes share a legato sound where there are no rests in the music. Primarily because of this inability to stop playing, embellishments (which vary between types of bagpipe) are used to break up notes and to create the illusion of dynamic effect. Because of their importance, these embellishments are often highly technical systems specific to each bagpipe which take much study to master. Most bagpipes have at least one drone. A drone is most commonly a cylindrical tube with a single reed, although drones with double reeds do exist. The drone is designed in two or more parts, with a sliding joint so that the pitch of the drone can be manipulated. Some drones have a tuning bead, which effectively alters the length of the drone by opening a hole, allowing the drone to be tuned to two or more distinct pitches. The tuning bead may also shut off the drone altogether.I hope this has helped you to understand how bagpipes are able to deliver the beautiful music that comes from them.

Why Practice Drums With a Metronome?

By: Dan Brown
Practicing with a metronome will improve your time keeping dramatically! What... you say you can already keep time? Try to keep time with a metronome for about twenty seconds. It will show you how good you really can keep time. If you have never tried it...try it! You will see there is room for improvment. In order to be an outstanding drummer you'll need to keep good time, and practicing with a metronome can help you do that. A metronome can improve your time keeping almost by magic. And, we know how important time keeping is, particularly for a drummer. You may wonder what the big deal is and think, "No one is gonna be able to distinguish any small changes in tempo in the middle of a song." Well, that may be true, but the major importance of keeping good time is at three different places in a song... 1) The times when you break away for a fill and come back to the original rhythm.2) If the song contains pauses and later returns to the original rhythm.3) If the song contains different tempos and returns to the original rhythm. A metronome is such a vital tool in music education that most teachers of guitar, piano, and violin all utilize the power of metronomes within their lessons. How then, even more important for the time keeper of a band to practice with a metronome. I can't strees enough the importance of practicing with a metronome. Once you go out and invest in one, start out by setting it at 80 beats per minute and play along with a standard 4/4 disco beat. This is a good pace to begin. It will give you enough time between beats to concentrate and land your beat in sync with the beat of the mertonome. You will see that when you first start practicing with a metronome it can become very discouraging, but then you will eventually get the hang of it and keep pretty good time. Then it may become a little boring. It's at that point where you must challenging yourself a little bit more. Adjust your metronome to a few more beats and increase your speed. Not so much where you will sacrifice your form, though. You don't want to become sloppy. Once you feel like you are really getting good at staying in sync with the metronome using a 4/4 beat and at various speeds you should begin to practice a variety of different rhythms, also at various speeds. Practicing with a metronome will improve your drumming dramatically, so if you don't have one, get one. You will be amazed at how much it will increase your level of playing.

A Look At The Music Of Scotland

By: Gregg Hall
The unique music of Scotland is easily recognized around the world and has remained a vibrant force to this day while many forms of traditional music worldwide have experienced a loss of popularity to pop music. Even with emigration and the influx of music imported from the rest of Europe and the United States, the music of Scotland has been able to keep the majority of its traditional structure and has even influenced many other forms of music.Traditional Scottish music even while influential to and being influenced by both Irish and English traditional music is still an art form unto itself and in spite of the increasing popularity of varied international pop music styles it remains a vital and everlasting Scottish tradition. There are numerous Scottish record labels and music festivals as well as Scottish music magazines.Although many people in the world think immediately of bagpipes when thinking about Scottish music, bagpipes are not unique or indigenous to Scotland. Don't get me wrong, bagpipes are a very important part of Scottish music tradition but they were actually imported into Scotland around the 15th century from other areas in Europe where they are still played. The pìob mór, or Great Highland Bagpipe, is the most distinctively Scottish form of the instrument; it was created for clan pipers to be used for various, often military or marching, purposes. Piping clans included the MacArthurs, MacDonalds, McKays and, especially, the MacCrimmons, who were hereditary pipers to the Clan MacLeod. In modern times bagpipes have even found there way into many songs in pop music with rockers like Rod Stewart who was extremely popular in the late 1970's and 80's. He used bagpipes in many of his popular songs. Another more recent artist whose Celtic music has been well received is Enya.If you haven't explored this beautiful music form I urge you to do so. Scottish music and in particular the Celtic Music of Enya can be very soothing and stress relieving.

Become A Better Musician With Better Practice Habits

By: Gregg Hall
As with anything in life, you will become a better musician the more you practice and even though you can't expect to be an overnight sensation in most cases, you can dramatically increase your performance by the way you practice. Most people don't think about warming up before practicing their music but just like an athlete it will help you to perform better and learn faster. Always warm up before you begin practicing to settle your nerves and get your body relaxed so that you will get the best results from your practice session.Another crucial aspect to practicing music is setting realistic and attainable goals. Very few people can sit down and play a son perfectly with just a little practice, it takes time and repetition. Many musical scores may take weeks of practice just to master one song. For exceptionally long pieces, separate them into sections and concentrate on a particular section during each practice session.Strategy is also important, especially when trying to learn a complex piece of music. You can play a tough to learn section repeatedly until you get it down or you can play it more slowly than intended and gradually increase the speed until you are playing at the tempo the music was written for. Before you begin to play a certain piece of music, analyze it to determine the style it is supposed to be played in, what the timing should be, and the speed in which it is meant to be played. It is best to read over the entire piece a couple of times first so that you will know what the music should be played like before you get started. If your aim is to become as good a musician as possible you need to practice as much as you can. When you see professional musicians who seem to play so flawlessly, you can believe that they practice their craft for several hours daily with extreme dedication. You should break your practices up into segments such as this:First you should warm up, going though through scales, chords, arpeggios, and book warm-up exercises before attempting a complicated piece of music. The next step should to practice increasing the speed of your play by beginning at a slower tempo then moving up. This is similar to what we mentioned above about learning a difficult song.Another way to help you to learn to read music better is to attempt to play an entire sheet of music you have never done. Doing this will assist you in your reading skill and enable you to learn to play new music much faster.Mastering the art of music isn't something that can be done overnight, it takes years of practice and dedication.

Give Your Self Confidence A Boost By Learning a Musical Instrument

By: Gregg Hall
Although learning to play a musical instrument can be one of the most difficult undertakings you have ever attempted, it can also be one of the most rewarding. If you are a lover of music, and have the sincere desire to learn, you will get a great boost of self confidence and a feeling of accomplishment by learning how to play an instrument. If you have never tried to learn to play before, you may wonder what the whole point is about learning to play a musical instrument in the first place. If you aren't totally committed you may even think it isn't really a big deal to you. The truth of the matter is that by learning to play music you are also learning a universal form of communication that all people enjoy and understand. If you are suffering from a lack of self esteem or need a confidence boost, learning a musical instrument can provide those things for you. It is the satisfaction in doing something well that makes us feel better about ourselves. It is one of the greatest forms of therapy. It is important that you identify the reasons that you are learning to play music in the first place. Even though playing an instrument well allows you to express yourself through music and be heard it is important to realize that not everyone may appreciate the style of music you play or how you play it. This is why I feel it is important that you learn to play music for yourself first, if others like and appreciate it then great. You may also be one of those who have decided to learn to play music for a living. There is good money in the music business for those who learn to play well and if you have the discipline and resolve you may be able to be a professional musician putting on your own concerts and maybe even recording your own music CD. Even if it is on your mind to earn money from your music you will still be more successful if you truly love music and would play for free than if money is your number one goal. I think this is true for any vocation and it is obvious to all when someone really loves what they do.If you have decided you want to learn to play an instrument you definitely should think about taking some coaching lessons in addition to playing on your own. Usually you can add one hour weekly coaching to hone the skills you are learning plus it allows for someone else to be able to help you and evaluate your progress.Regardless of whether your ambition is to become a professional musician or just to learn to play for the pure enjoyment and self satisfaction, you will feel very good about yourself for taking the time to learn to play.

Music downloading is here to stay, it's legit, it's legal, and everyone is doing it. The internet is a disruptive technology, and music downloading was the first real poster child for all that disruptive behavior. Apart from a few unmentionable topics, music was and still is one of the biggest looked for and downloaded items on the internet. And just as well it should be. It makes perfect sense. It fits, it's convenient, it better for the artists, and in the long run, better for the consumer. The only guy it's not great for, is the big money middle men. But hey, they had their chance and blew it. More on that later.Long Live The NobodiesIndies are the heart and soul of the music world. At one point in time every musician was an indie looking for their big break. They did what they did for the love of their art. Because it felt good. Along the way some found their big break, lost their soul, and sold out. You know the ones. Their the ones whose first big album was great, and all the rest sucked. Some got their big break, and stayed true to their art, and kept their soul. They just keep cranking out great music for years on end. The internet loves indies. It's the great equalizer. Any artist can have an online presence, promote their music to an audience of millions, and let consumers download their music to their hearts content.. They don't need mister megabucks-big-corporate-middle-guy. And boy is the old middle guy worried.Napster vs The Big BoysA few years ago, Napster started off as the music bad boy of the online world. Breaking all the rules (what rules?) and trash talking the big boys with one of the largest grass root movements ever seen. Everybody and their hamster was downloading free music, and there was nothing anyone could do. Until . . . the big boys took those trash talking music computer geeks to see the judge. And hey, the big boys won, Napster lost. Actually, nobody really won. The consumer lost, cause now they had to drive to the mall to get their music. Napster was put out of business (temporarily). Even the big boys lost, cause now there were a hundred little napsters doing the exact same thing, plus they let the best tech available for music downloads slip out of their fingers, instead of using it as their own distribution channel. Bad bad bad big boys.Download Me Now . . . PleaseNow everyone wants you to download their music. iTunes, Amazon, Cnet, Cousin Eddy . . . everyone. Even Napster, is back in the music download music. Pay for and legit of course. The big boys are still worried. The indies are on the rise, and I don't have to drive to the mall to get my favorite music. Lucky me.Welcome To My Future - The MusicalThings are only gonna get better. As the internet gets bigger and faster, their will be more choice and convenience for music consumers, more artists will be able to make a decent living, and the latest collection of blond bimbo divas with their boy band boyfriends will only be a footnote amongst the praise being leveled on the rising wave of talented and genuinely artistic indie stars. Of course someones gotta lose in this whole new paradigm. Here's hoping it's mister fat-cat-do-nothin record promoter that's been relegated to selling the best in new wave vacum cleaners to my inlaws.

Pop Music: Remember the 90s?

By: hitesh patel
Pop music of the 90s was fun. While some view this musical time period as one of the worst for the genre, others beg to differ. One thing is for sure the 1990s brought a host of one-hit wonders, as well as catchy tunes that soon faded in the shadows of fad history. These are the songs we remember the most (for good or for bad) because they were often part of a heavy rotation on our radios and television music channels. Pop music in the 90s offered a variety of songs, combining an array of varied musical genres, such as rap and country. For instance, who really took Vanilla Ice seriously with his infectious poor excuse for rap, Ice Ice Baby This was clearly pop music in disguise. Another pop music entry added to the list of one hit wonders during the 90s was Groove is in the Heart by Deee lite. This is what pop music is all about fun, fast and catchy. You can still listen to this song and cant help but to move to the beat. How many of you still try to make that signature pop sound with the inside of your mouth Many people associated pop music of the 90s with an infusion of high-energy tunes. This is when groups, such as the Spice Girls made their mark with hits like Wannabe. Their crazy appearance and unique personalities encouraged females, both young and old, to embrace their individuality. Speaking of being yourself, RuPaul captured many listeners with his/her pop songs, such as Supermodel (You Better Work). You didnt need a runway to appreciate this fun tune.Pop music in the 90s also touched on controversial social and cultural issues that made you think and enter debate with family and friends. Michael Jackson (the King of Pop) challenged our perceptions of race with his intense, visually elaborate Black or White song. You could think whatever you want about his lifestyle, but the song and music video were quite interesting. The different faces of people morphing into one another were a real treat for pop music listeners. What about the pop music fads that emerged during the 90s? You cant deny that you attempted or thought about trying the Macarena, which became a fad from the song of the same name by Los Del Rio. This wasnt the only dance fad to come out of the 90s. The pop country tune of Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus became quite popular, bringing non-country listeners to kick up their heels. Some television shows during the 90s produced pop music hits through their theme songs. How Do You Talk To An Angel by the Heights dominated pop music charts and radio stations. Just like many songs during the 90s, the tune and group soon passed by. Depending on what nightclub you frequented, you were either Getting Jiggy Wit It with Will Smith or striking a pose with Madonnas Vogue. The pop music of the 90s definitely brought wallflowers to the dance floor and sent you home drenched in sweat. Then there were the borderline rap tunes of the 90s that found a place in the vinyl and tape collections of pop music listeners. Fun tunes, such as Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-a-Lott and The Humpty Dance by Digital Underground were accepted by a wide range of music fanatics. In this category, we might as well throw in the fond memories of Informer by Snow and Come Baby Come by K7 while we are at it. During the 90s, we even allowed ourselves to accept and indulge in the syrupy pop tunes of the Hanson brothers, such as their popular Mmm Bop song. There is always a crop of songs during any era that for some reason gain a certain level of popularity that we cant quite put our finger on. For some, these songs might include Rico Suave by Geraldo, Cantaloop by US3 (what was that song even about?) and 2 Legit 2 Quit by MC Hammer.

Latin American: 1-2-ChaChaCha

By: hitesh patel
Music has played a central role in Latin America's turbulent recent history like for example the nueva cancion movement. Latin American music, sometimes referred to as just Latin music, includes the music of many countries and communities and comes in many varieties, from the simple, rural conjunto music of northern Mexico to the sophisticated habanera of Cuba, from the symphonies of Heitor Villa-Lobos to the simple and moving Andean flute. Latin music is varied, with the only truly unifying thread being the use of the Spanish language or, in Brazil, its close cousin the Portuguese language. Latin music is a catch-all term for a number of diverse styles from different regions and countries in Latin America.Often, the term refers to Latin pop -- either dance-based or pop oriented-music sung in Spanish or Tejano. Tejano has a number of different styles, from romantic ballads to the narrative nortenos, and they're usually performed by large groups, armed acoustic instruments and horns and by the '80s and '90s, it also had embraced smooth production techniques from American pop-rock and soft rock. Latin America is also known for such vivacious dance music as salsas and sambas, which have layers of percussion, blaring horns and an infectious sense of style. Still more Europeanized forms (individual songs, genres, and their dance steps) have become popular on the "pan-Latin" and international level through their diffusion by mass media. These include the BOLERO and chachacha of Cuba, the TANGO of Argentina, and the cabaret samba and bossa nova of Brazil. With the exception of tejano and mariachi, most Latin music is defined by its strong rhythmic chords.Although Spain isn't a part of Latin America, Spanish music (and Portuguese music) and Latin American music strongly cross-fertilized each other, but Latin music also absorbed influences from English and American music, and particularly, African music. In Latin music, culminates the styles of different music techniques.Instrumental music is more significant among South American Indians than those of the North as they use indigenous instruments that include flutes, whistles, rattles, trumpets of simple clay, bark or bamboo, conch-shell trumpets and various drum types including the double-headed frame drum. Instruments often have ritual significance, particularly bullroarers, stamping tubes, pellet-bells, bark trumpets and certain flutes. Some of the most complex music of Latin America is practiced in the Andean region, where harps, guitars, violins, lutes and other European instruments are played as well as indigenous flutes and panpipes. Latin Music has come to become World Music.

Get Noticed As A Singer

By: Chris Chew
Some singers catapulted to stardom rather quickly, some sparkled, flickered a little and then faded into obscurity while most singers stayed the same for years if not forever at mediocrity level? Why is it that most singers never make it big in their singing career, not to say becoming superstars? Well, for starters, most singers begin their career as a lounge singer, singing in small clubs and belting out cover versions of established and popular singers. They selection of songs will be dictated by their audiences and so they must cover a wide genre of songs. At one moment, you can enjoy a Barbara Streisand ballad and then the next song will be a fast Chaka Khan number followed by latin inspired Michael Buble's 'Sway'. Yes, it is good to be versatile and able to sing songs of various styles and genre. In fact it is even admirable if you can sing a Celine Dione number and sounded like Celine and then a Frank Sinatra swing sounding like ol' blue eyes himself. However, as a famous vocal coach, Brett Manning once said, 'I have coached dozens of young women who can now sing almost exactly like Celine Dion. But then again, who wants a counterfeit when the real Celine Dione is already available?' This quote is taken from Brett's article 'How to build a successful singing voice'.In other words, most singers just take it as part of their job to sound like the original cover versions of songs and never try to create a distinctive sound and style of their own. Now, if all singers sounded alike, how would you get noticed and recognized for who you are? How to make it big as a singer when you can only sing other people's song and imitate other singer's style of singing?Let me ask you a question, how many times have you heard a song being sung and immediately able to identify the singer although you have never heard that particular song performed by the singer? Many times isn't it? Why? Because every prolific singer's voice and style are like their thumbprint. It is distinguishable from the rest of the pack. That is why they stand out and get noticed. If you want your singing voice to get noticed and make it big as a singer, develop a distinctive style and voice of your own. After all, you have sung so many singer's style that you can use these influences to develop your own and stand out from the crowd. Till next time, happy singing.

The DJ Success Formula - Tips And Tricks Have Different Value

By: Norman Freeman
The first impression how today's DJs grow up to be so popular often fools you. Too many times people talk about the happily quoted luck - being at the right spot at the right time and so on. You want to know my opinion about this? It is all nonsense.Success has nothing to do with being lucky. The universe is fair. If someone succeeds, this someone has earned it 100%. This luck is almost without any exceptions no success that comes over night. A popular DJ and Producer said something very wise to me some time during my research:'Success over night is just great, but unfortunately it usually takes about 10 years.' I have been talking to Moguai, Tom Novy, Special D., Marcel Woods, Mark Norman and many others. They all just agreed.Faith and VisionYou have to believe in yourself, which means, considerably longer than up to the first disappointment. You make mistakes to learn from them! Stay focused on what you want to achieve. Make a clear plan of it. Make a mind-map of where you want to go. Go in details! It will help you to believe in it.Do not let anything or anybody lead you astray. If you take a closer look on the DJ success stories of each single professional in the DJ business, you will find the most diverse ways to achieve their goals and even more diverse possibilities to go on from there. Nevertheless, there is a common denominator in all of these stories. Little, sometimes casually mentioned sentences, will tell you about the small factors that caused something big to happen and that could possibly cause something big for you.During my research over the last 18 months, I tryed to outline these small factors, these different variables that could provoke success. The 'DJ Success Formula'!The provocated luckIt is mostly a concurrence of circumstances that leads to success. I want to show you how you can use the circumstances, which have potential to 'accidentally' lead to success, in a deliberate and goal-oriented manner. These circumstances have often more to do with marketing, promotion and psychology than with music. You should not be startled by that, but motivated to learn some principles. A simple, solid basis is all you need. I am not giving any guarantees that you will find yourself among the Top 100 DJ of the world in the next DJ Mag Polls evaluation. How could I do that anyways? There is still the weakest factor in the system: YOU yourself.Be honest: How often did someone give you really useful tips and you thought to yourself 'Yeah that could really work'. And more importantly: How many times did you really try to use them? From now on I want you to move your ass and work on achieving your goals. The only promise that I can give you is that you will go faster, more determined and straighter towards the right goals, that you will recognize them and that you will avoid mistakes that hundredth of other DJ had to make. The most important DJ-skillYour 'mindset', the inner attitude, is your most important DJ-skill. Some 'old hands' will be arrogant, because your biggest role models might not be 'Kraftwerk', 'Lfo' or 'Harthouse Label'. Funnily enough I still experience this: Clubbers over 30 years of age label newcomers with imbecile comparisons and try to impress with rave-historical general knowledge. This is the biggest nonsense.Do not let yourself be dominated by people who did not make it themselves. It is all about music, entertainment, and fun. For everyone to one's own liking. In conjunction with me there will be no music-racism. No over- or underground nonsense.Be aware. Whichever style you prefer and however old you may be: you walk your own way. I will remind you of this over and over again. However, mind that you will not be disrespectful. YOU should always be friendly and polite and have respect for every person and every style that you will encounter.Take action and make your own way! That is exactly why I am going to take you to the other side of DJing, the "marketing" which in my opinion is even more interesting, because this is really about DJ gigs, travel, foreign countries and leveraging your very own DJ success. DJing itself is pretty easy to learn by yourself. Getting booked for gigs is difficult.

Learn the difference between guitars

By: Little Money
The Spanish guitar is a type of guitar usually used for playing “classical" music and originated from Spain. The guitar is made of soft boozel wood with a large, hollow sound-box with a shape similar to of the female body, which is probably why so many male guitarists give their guitars female aliases. The guitar’s long fret-board is made of soft wood, and the head is made to produce very fine tuning. Historically, the Spanish guitar was strung with pig’s gut strings that gave a singly, gentle, slightly soft sound. The Spanish guitar is made for any music pieces but particularly suited to sweet old classical music. The Flamenco Guitar is very similar to the classical guitar: Main difference between this and a classical guitar is that the fretboard of the Flamenco guitar is even wider and longerThe Acoustic Guitar is also very similar in comparison to the Spanish guitar. The main differences are that its fretboard is smaller and built with more endurance to cope with greater tension, the sound-box is sometimes slightly bigger and the stringsare made of steel or hard nylon. The sound the Acoustic guitar makes is smaller and more "crisp". This is very popular with old musicians on both sides of the Alantic, who have no trouble playing complex finger-picking styles the guitars. You might be want to get this guitar if you are interested in playing rhythms, doing a lot of heavy strums, and are taking your first steps in rock, like using a variety of tunings or if you wanting to play smooth jazz and blues rock.Electric guitars need to be plugged into an electric amplifier for any sound to be heard. Electric guitars are usually completely solid and can be extremely heavy. When you are playing this type of guitar wear a comfortable shoulder strap. Most electric guitars have a thin, hollow sound-box in which the electric gadgetry is concealed. Electric guitars are usually more lightweight, and can make a variety of sounds from "classical" through to a Stratocaster. This type off guitar is used for rock, pop concerts and playing in venues where loud amplification is needed. The bass (guitar) usually carries less than 4 strings and often comes with a no fret neck. The intonation of the bass guitar is similar as for the bottom four strings of a electric guitar but down one octave, and its strings are therefore made to be thicker and heavier. The bass is mainly used for laying down thick beefy sounds and usually used for keeping the rhythm and accompany the drums. In the majority of rock bands the bassist rather than the drummer holds the band's rhythm together.

Music Lovers Power

By: Phoebe Tiangson
Many of the most important events in our lifes are commemorated with music. Those who have served in the military never forget the stirring cadence of a military march. Even decades later the sound of a military band will take the old veteran back to the days when his step was sure and strong and his new found confidence in his ability to defend his country and his buddies from harm knew no bounds.Tunes often are associated with important events in our lives. Perhaps it is the song that you danced to at the high school prom with the person who later became your lifetime partner that still fans your passions. Perhaps it is the tune that was playing as you danced with your new spouse at your wedding party. It may be a song or two that was sung by a famous entertainer whose performance you were lucky enough to hear on your 30th birthday.I still vividly remember seeing Elvis Presley perform near the end of his career. It was my friends birthday present to herself. I was her date for the evening and never expected to be so moved by 'The King's' performance. But I was, and am still grateful to my friend for asking me to escort her to the live show.I wasn't that much of an Elvis fan prior to his performance but had a far greater appreciation of his talent after seeing the master at work. What a show! The Internet has created a new important venue for music. Lyrics to just about every song that has ever been written have been archived and can be easily accessed with an Internet search. The sharing of music files has been controversial all be it widespread. Legal means of gaining access to any type of music from Internet sources are under development and have lead to an entirely new growth industry. The power of music can be a strong unifying force in a world that badly needs unification and cooperation on issues that affect us all. Peoples of the world should rejoice in the rich heritage that music brings to every culture. The sharing of ideas and music over the Internet only adds to the significance of music as a universal medium of communications.People all over the world love their music. You can bet there is as much enthusiasm for a new Eminem rap song among Eminem fans as there is for classical jazz or a classical piano performance among more conventional music fans. There are different strokes for different folks as they say in Dixie and nowhere is this better illustrated than in the field of music. However varied musicial tsstes may be amoung individuals we should consider the common thread that music weaves between all peoples and build upon that common ground to achieve a better understanding of how we are connected in our humanity.People the world over have common basic needs and music is one of them.

Why Not Enjoy Unlimited Music Downloads?

By: Davion W
Downloading music online may be on the lips of many music enthusiasts nowadays but to the uninitiated, it can be pretty confusing and sometimes difficult for the individual. Let us look at what the whole idea of downloading music online at membership sites that offer unlimited music downloads is all about.Listening to music on CDs is now a passé. It is not meant to sound offending but this is especially true amongst the younger generation today. Teens and young adults born after the 80s are now turning to digital music in MP3 format rather than playing music CDs on the portable CD player, which some of us affectionately remembered as the CD Walkman. The reasons for choosing online music are obvious. Technology is so advanced that you do not have to carry a whole CD rack anywhere you go just to enjoy all your favorite songs. If that sounds exaggerating, a CD player packed with your favorite CD can at most offer you 20 of your compiled songs at max in exchange for you lugging the 6 inch gadget around in a bag. Contrast this with a small little gadget with the size of a matchbox or cigarette box that stores hundreds of songs, it becomes blatant why flocks of people are downloading music online. It is affordable for most folks to download music files at iTunes if you are looking for one or two of your favorite hits. Though the selection is marvelous, with tons of songs, music and music videos and seemingly unlimited music downloads, however, it soon became clear to music enthusiasts that buying music to beef up their collection is denting their pockets. Now the juicy news is that there are new download sites that have sprung up, offering unlimited music downloads, including the latest soundtracks, music videos etc to members at incredibly low one-time prices. Imagine being able to download unlimited music files for the price cheaper than 2 DVDs. Isn’t that awesome?Human beings are creatures of dilemma. When the choices are few, we grumble about the lack of choices. But when the download sites are numerous, we complain about the difficulty to select the right membership download site. Fret not, as there are a few quick tips to select an ideal site for unlimited music downloads. 1. Selection of MusicBe sure to search through the catalogue and stick with the one that offers you the right songs you wish to download.2. Ensure Format CompatibilityThe format of music files offered must be compatible with your portable media player, ie MP3 player. Look for sites that offer MP3 ready music files to save you the headache of converting the music files into playable format ie MP3.3. Compare PricingsLook at the pricing of each download site. All sites offer millions of files, and it is not wrong to say that they provide access to unlimited music downloads. As a smart consumer, paying the same price for 20 million songs at Site A rather than for 10 million songs at Site B sounds like a better deal isn’t it? However, be sure to check the selection. I believe that this article has given you a brief introduction to the online world of unlimited music downloads. You can pick up more detailed tips on how to select a great music download site that suits your preference and read a review of the most popular sites at my blog. This article may be freely reprinted or distributed in its entirety in any ezine, newsletter, blog or website. The Internet – A Great Place to Find Guitar Lessons

By: Groshan Fabiola
If you are interested in learning how to play the guitar the easy, convenient way and in the quickest time possible, then it is advisable to turn to the Internet for help. At present there are thousands of high-quality, dedicated online resources that have been especially designed to meet the needs and requirements of existing and prospective guitar players worldwide, so everyone who wishes to learn more about playing the guitar can find and access a wide range of invaluable guitar playing tips, video tutorials and lessons simply through a few clicks of the mouse. However, in order to have the guarantee that you will only be provided with quality information and online guitar lessons that really produce significant results, it is very important to separate the efficient, properly designed and administered websites from the rest and only stick with the ones that are reliable and can help you improve your guitar playing in the minimum of time, with the least of effort and most important, for less money. With so many guitar lessons out there (both free and paid), the task of finding the best ones (and more important, the ones that are most appropriate to you) can be very difficult. The best approach to this problem is to do a quick research on the specialized online resources with a good reputation and choose the websites that provide the guitar lessons which best suit your needs and requirements. Before choosing the lessons of a certain online tutorial-providing website over the lessons of another, it is recommendable to ask for the advice of your friends or other persons in whom you trust in order to find out whether those particular guitar lessons are efficient or not. Checking the testimonial sections and blogs of online guitar lesson websites is another way to determine the actual quality of the guitar lessons, tips and tutorials they provide. By choosing to use only the lessons and tips of the major, highly reputed online guitar lesson-providing websites, you will ensure that you will be able to learn to play the guitar in an exciting, efficient and simple manner and that your efforts of learning how to play the guitar will pay off in the least of time. Especially if you are a complete novice at playing the guitar (and aren’t yet capable of evaluating the quality and efficiency of online guitar lessons you may come across), it is very important to stick with the ones offered by the best guitar learning online resources. By doing this, you will avoid wasting time and money with guitar lessons that don’t produce the expected results. Once you have found the online guitar lesson-providing websites that are right for you, all you have to do is choose the lessons, tips and guitar-playing video tutorials that match your levels of skill and experience and start practicing in order to improve your playing. In case you are a beginner, it is also recommendable for you to decide over what you are interested in learning first or what guitar techniques you wish to master. For instance, if you want to become a pro at playing electric guitar, using acoustic guitar lessons would in most cases be a waste of time, considering that the guitar techniques used for playing the electric guitar are very different from those used to play the acoustic guitar. Furthermore, it is very important to establish a list of priorities of the things you want to learn and take guitar playing one step at a time. As an example, rushing in at learning advanced guitar playing techniques such as guitar tapping or harmonic picking without knowing the basics behind guitar playing (the basic chords, the most extensively utilized guitar scales) are very likely to get you nowhere. Another important thing to take in consideration is the genre of music you are interested in learning to play. For instance, online guitar lessons which concentrate on teaching playing rock guitar are very different from those which concentrate on teaching playing jazz guitar. To obtain the best results, it is therefore crucial to decide exactly what you want to learn and also establish a list of learning priorities. After doing this, with the help of quality guitar lessons provided by a reliable, dedicated guitar lessons website, and with a little ambition and practice you will be able to play the guitar like a pro in no time!

DJ Equipment

By: Garanichev
Whether we like it or not times are changing whether its technology, life styles, global warming or in this subject even people's taste in music. For some this can be for the better or the worse but no matter what we do it is changing and when it comes down to music a successful performance by a disk jockey depends on the presence of the right DJ equipment. This, along with along with adequate musical talents plays a very important role in the career of a DJ or any other musician for that matter. Having the right equipment is the best advantage a DJ can have. Any DJ gear other than real pro gear will only throw a person's skills and techniques off. It is always advisable to get the right DJ gear the first time. The Technics-1200 or 1210 turntables are industry standard and are widely recommended by most DJs as the best vinyl decks around or typically the Pioneer CDJ1000 as the best CD deck you can get but now there are more hidden giants coming and already are here like PCDJ, Numark Cue and many more wonderful DJ software. Companies such as ION have released huge selling items like the ION USB turntable that converts Vinyl to MP3 which has been widely recommended as one of the best selling items of 2006 especially for that generation who have the masses of vinyl just sitting there in the loft gathering dust. Other Items that are going to be a huge hit this year will be items like the fully programmable ION Drumkit. However, the most important thing to remember is that it is not the equipment that entertains, but is definitely the DJ himself. Owning the latest equipment won't make a person any better as a DJ. It is possible to start up on a budget of about ?1000, which will enable a person to purchase a sound system from manufactures like KAM, Gemini, JBL, Peavey and a few lighting effects like Pro Light Magic Gobo's. In case the budget won't stretch to this, a person may need to consider buying 2nd hand or leasing the equipment from companies such as www.whybuynew.co.ukPurchasing a wide-ranging music library is far more important than how much lighting a DJ has, and should be the first consideration. A DJ can build up on the lighting, and upgrade the sound system if required once the work starts coming in to substantiate it. The most important equipment required by mobile disc jockeys consists of sound recordings in preferred medium, which is often vinyl records, compact discs and mp3s. Two devices for playback of sound recordings are also required for the purpose of alternating back and forth and creating continuous playback. A sound system meant for magnification of the recordings is required for broadcasting the music. Apart from this, a DJ may also need a mixer and a microphone. Headphones used to listen to one recording while the other is playing, without transmitting the sound to the audience is also strongly recommended. Other equipments may also be added. These include drum machines, samplers, effects processors, and computerized performance systems. Opinions of other experienced DJs, magazines and a number of websites prove to be an efficient guide in purchasing the right kind of equipment.DJ Equipment provides detailed information on Buy DJ Equipment, Cheap DJ Equipment, Discount DJ Equipment, DJ Equipment and more. DJ Equipment is affiliated with Virtual DJs.

How To Seriously Improve Your Guitar Playing

By: Chris Standring
There are bedroom guitar players and there are live performers. There doesn't seem to be anything in between. The minute you walk on to a stage (whether you get paid or not) you are a professional. You are in the business of entertaining and displaying your wares, so to speak. And if you really want to seriously get your guitar playing together it is the latter you need to strive for in my opinion. I am not suggesting you 'turn pro', you know attempt to do this thing full time, that is a whole other set of issues itself, but in order for your guitar playing to really get to where it needs to get to, you simply have to play in a live performance setting, preferably in a public forum. Ideally with other musicians you can interact with. You can spend a lifetime reading books, studying your musical heroes, playing along to music minus one records, but none of this will ultimately give you the full picture. In order to be a true well rounded musician, you have to have real world experience. I'll try to explain why...When I was just starting out in the profession as a fresh untainted fish in the vast sea of the London music business, I had to get myself known in order to find work. So I set about to answer ads in music papers. Now, after studying classical guitar at the London College of Music, I came out of a 3 year course with a facility to sight-read. Or should I say the beginnings of sight-reading ability, as jazz and pop music written on paper is a whole other world, as I was about to find out. I remember having to sight-read a piece of jazz music with a dance band at an audition. There were about 10 guitar players going for this gig. I must have been about 23 years old. The musical director said "I kind of like what you did Chris but you didn't really cut it mate! There are other guys here that have what I need". Ouch!!! That hurt. But I was young. It was actually good to hear. So I went back to my music library, pulled out a ton of violin music and practiced reading in different positions on the fretboard. Not to mention learning how to grab chords on sight in different fret positions. Another time, I went down to audition for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, a band known to be extremely taxing musically, and a training ground for London session players. I sat in the guitar chair with my Gibson 335 on my lap, ready to play. The director called a chart, I placed it on the stand and he counted it off. He counted it off around 250 BPM. Frighteningly fast! Well, it was all I could do to get my eyes to follow the music, measure by measure, much less play the music that was written within those bars! I didn't even touch my guitar that rehearsal. I simply placed it back in its case and went home. Ouch again! That was a hard knock! I gave myself exactly a year to get it together. I went back to my practicing with a vengeance. A year later I joined the band for about a year and a half.Another for instance; about 13 years ago I was playing with a jazz singer in a trio situation with an eminent LA drummer and acoustic bassist. I hadn't done much trio playing, if any at the time, but I was looking forward to playing. At the end of one of the songs I completely messed up the ending. In fact I would go further, I hadn't really worked on any song endings. Didn't really have that together at all. The drummer scowled at me, particularly because I threw him off, as I was not definite in how I wanted to end the song (because I didn't know myself!). He was furious when I made him look bad. He said to me "Dude, you've got to dictate these endings, you're the one playing the chords!". He was right. I was crushed! I went home, sulked for a week (maybe two). Then I went back to my practice room. I was not to be defeated.....These are the hard knocks you simply have to get in your music life to dictate what you need to work on to get your total musicianship together! You just cannot expect to perfect your instrument without real world experience. You can't get that experience any other way. I can recount tons of times that this sort of thing has happened, and there are still things today that I learn on a weekly basis at live gigs, telling me what I need to work on. The difference today of course is that it's me who is being critical of myself, rather than other bandmates and musical directors telling me I suck! And the neccessity of performing live is true of any musical genre you choose. Interacting with other musicians is an art in itself. I know technically great players who can't play with others. Does this make them great musicians? I'm not so sure. But they sure can get round the instrument. But if they were to do any amount of live ensemble playing they would have one or two knocks coming, and if they are smart they would work on those issues. Otherwise it's back to solo guitar playing in the back of their local restaurant. (A noble and valid thing to do, let me also say). There are many issues that come up in a real live playing situation that just don't come up in a bedroom practice session. Time, time-feel, supportive ensemble playing, projection of sound and tone, and most of all a sense of energy and commitment within a performance that is extremely different, and is very difficult to even put into words frankly. You just need to experience it, and that experience will improve your playing tenfold. So get out there and do some gigs. I know it is hard to make that happen sometimes, but if you cannot make it happen then start a rehearsal band with a few others and play through repertoire. Get together with other guitarists and play through tunes, take solos and take turns being supportive. As you improve, take the plunge and take yourself to the next level. And by recommending you do all this I am by no means suggesting you put away your books, records and Jamie Abersold play alongs. Absolutely not. This is something of course you should continue to do. But it is only 50% of your musical makeup. I promise you, by performing live you will improve yourself as a guitar player, but most of all as a musician, and at the end of the day this is what we all need to aspire to.Go to it and have fun!

Playing Guitar - A Reflection Of Your Soul

By: Arthor Pens
The guitar, be it electric or acoustic, is the most versatile of instruments. You can strum a few chords, adopt a highly disciplined classical guitar technique, or play sophisticated jazz chord and scale progressions. The choice is yours. Whatever your bag, the journey to achieving your goal and the fundamental sound is the real buzz. It's a funny thing, but music is unlike most other activities. Take football for example, there is no escaping the fact that if you want to play pro-football you had better be good and there are no short cuts. Technique and fitness is an absolute must. Musical expression is different and shares may similarities with the spoken word. A few well chosen words can be far more effective than a tidal wave of sophisticated verbal statement. So it is with playing the guitar. Arguably, the most successful singer songwriter who ever lived is Bob Dylan, whose delivery is based essentially on guitar sounds combined with an awesome skill as a lyricist. His musical structure is generally simple - but the simplicity of the music combined with great hook lines and lyrics is bang on the nail as a musical statement. So the fact to take on board is that technical ability has little to do with musical talent. If your groove is a simple country, reggae or blues feel you can be damn good and highly relevant without being a technical genius. The simple player who plays with feel and taste is a musician, the same as a highly accomplished classical or jazz guitarist. It is amazing how formally trained musicians, i.e. classical, or other technical jazz players, are usually the most ineffective exponents of rock, country, pop or blues music. Playing guitar is essentially an attitude, combined with feel and the necessary musical knowledge to express what you wish to play. Don't be fooled into following the path of so many potentially great musicians and be fazed by more accomplished players. When you tune in to the simplicity of a player such as the great blues guitarist B. B. King, you can't help but be affected by his economy of notes, played in such a meaningful, soulful musical context. Playing guitar has an infinite number of possibilities. It is the most adaptable, useable instrument, and it's the journey to your goal that's the fun part. You will never stop learning guitar. Each time you pick it up you will discover something new and it needn't be hard to play to be relevant!
